Scale a community rapidly using bold design and messaging.
Key Objectives
In September of 2023, my friend Diego and I were keen on meeting more startup founders at the University of Chicago, yet we found the school’s existing resources to be limited.
After some discussion, we decided to create our own community of like-minded students to learn about startups and work on exciting ideas together.
My question was: How can I use bold design and targeted messaging to attract as many students as possible?
Methodology & Inspiration
To stand out, we needed to be different - but not just for the sake of being different. The visuals and message need to work together to 1) seize attention and 2) deliver a punchy message.
Vintage posters from Nike, Rolex, and Porsche exemplify the kind of head-turning messages that attract their target consumers.
Apple, Nike, Rolex, and Porsche know how to advertise.
Rolex wants you to know that Rolex-owners are important.
Apple wants you to know that their computers are so fast you need gloves to “drive” them.
Nike wants you to know that their sneakers are sustainably made.
Porsche wants you to know that driving a 911 will make all of your problems go away.
At Windy Ventures, we want you to know that our community will broaden your horizon and open up your mind.
Pairing striking visuals with large texts, we are able to grab students’ attention and deliver the values we espouse.
Helvetica and Times New Roman are my fonts of choice because they are universally recognized and delivers bold messages with timeless style.
Results
In the span of 6 months, over 50 student founders and creatives have joined our student network. They regularly attend ours social, roundtable, and pitching events.
